A beautiful raptor - the Harris Hawk. I did this piece with 1/2" pastel stumps, except for the beak tip, lore hairs and eye. Quite a challenge. I might try this again using pencils so I can capture all the feather details.I visited the LA Zoo this past weekend and was very disappointed with nearly all the exhibits except for the Bird show. The Harris Hawk was only presented for a minute but the speaker mentioned something I had never heard before. Harris Hawks actually stand on each others' shoulders to gain a better vantage point for hunting. I did some research and it's a technique called "Back Standing" or "Stacking." I have not been able to locate a photo though. If you have one I would love to see how they look as I think this would make for a wonderful painting.
