YUK! oil pastels

I have heard of "oil pastels" but never tried them. Now I have - and any relationship they have to "pastels" is beyond me. They should be called "Really Gooey Crayons."
I can see the appeal if you paint really big or really loose - but, for the fine lines and details that I like to achieve, forget it. It's not that you can't achieve those details (a script brush and some turpentine will work), but I'm trying to stay away from solvents as much as possible. As I worked the flower and the Coyote eye I really didn't like the feel of working with this medium. I liked the vibrancy of the colors - but that was about all that I
liked. Other than flowers, and several species of birds, I can't think of much that is "vibrant" in the world of painting wildlife. Most species have very subdued colors so they can blend in with the environment. I'm learning that I really do enjoy the simplicity of graphite and pastel pencils. It's all about knowing how to work the medium and achieve the results you're looking for. That in itself is a challenge, and if your art challenges you - then you are more apt to continue creating more art. As my Mom always says, "Keep on - Keeping on!" :-)
